RECOVERY, CONTRAST THERAPY, AND WELLNESS TOOLS MADE SIMPLE

New to Recovery? Start here.

Most people who come to Plunge & Barrel are new to at least one of our modalities. You do not need to know exactly what to do before you arrive. Our team can help you choose a simple starting point based on your goals, whether that is soreness, stress relief, better sleep, post-workout recovery, or just feeling better.

FAQs

First Visit

I’m new to recovery. Where should I start?

Start simple. If it is your first time, our team can help you choose the best starting point based on your goals, comfort level, and schedule. Many first-time guests begin with a Guided Contrast Session so they can experience the sauna and cold plunge with support, learn the basics, and leave with simple best practices for feeling their best.

What happens during my first visit?

When you arrive, our team will help you get checked in, answer your questions, and walk you through what to expect so you feel comfortable before you begin.

Will someone show me what to do?

Yes. If you are new, our team can walk you through the basics, explain how each modality works, and help you feel comfortable before you begin. For the best first-time experience, we recommend booking a Guided Contrast Session for your first sauna and cold plunge.

Do I have to use the cold plunge?

No. You never have to use the cold plunge if it is not the right fit for you that day. If you decide to plunge, you can start with a short amount of time and build from there.

What should I bring?

Please bring a towel to sit on in the sauna and clean socks if you plan to use NormaTec compression. If you are using the cold plunge, bring swimwear or appropriate non-cotton plunge attire, plus a towel to dry off. Towels and socks are also available for purchase on site.

How long does a first session take?

Most first visits take about 20–30 minutes, depending on what you use. Cold plunge time is usually 2–5 minutes, depending on how many people are using the plunge. Red light therapy starts at 10 minutes, and sauna, infrared, and NormaTec sessions typically take longer. If it is your first visit, we recommend arriving a few minutes early so you have time to get settled and ask questions.

Is this only for athletes?

Not at all. Athletes love recovery, but Plunge & Barrel is for anyone who wants to feel better, recover more consistently, manage stress, support better sleep, or build a wellness routine. You do not need to be an athlete to benefit from taking care of your body.

Recovery Modalities

What is Contrast Therapy?

Contrast therapy combines heat and cold, usually sauna followed by cold plunge. The heat helps you warm up, relax, and sweat, while the cold creates a refreshing reset. Many people use contrast therapy to support recovery, circulation, stress management, and overall wellness.

What does the cold plunge do?

Cold plunge uses cold water immersion to create a quick, powerful reset for the body and mind. Many people use it to support post-workout recovery, soreness, circulation, mental resilience, and stress management. If you are new, start short and build gradually.

What is the difference between dry sauna and infrared sauna?

Both use heat, but they feel a little different. A dry sauna heats the air around you, creating a hotter traditional sauna experience. Infrared sauna uses infrared heat to warm the body more directly at a lower temperature. Many members enjoy both depending on their goals, comfort level, and how they want to feel that day.

What does red light therapy do?

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to support cellular energy, recovery, skin health, and overall wellness. Many members use it as a low-effort way to relax, reset, and support their recovery routine. Sessions start at 10 minutes.

What is Normatec compression?

Normatec compression uses air-powered sleeves to gently squeeze and release different areas of the body, helping you relax and feel refreshed. We offer Normatec for legs, arms, and hips, so you can target the areas that need it most. Many members use it after workouts, long days on their feet, travel, or anytime they feel tight, heavy, or tired.

Can I combine multiple therapies in one visit?

Yes. Many members combine multiple therapies in one visit based on their goals, schedule, and comfort level. For example, you might use sauna and cold plunge for contrast therapy, red light before or after your session, or Normatec compression to help your body feel refreshed. Our team can help you choose a simple flow that works for you.

Results & Consistency

How often should I come in to see results?

Consistency matters most. Many members come in 3–4 times per week, depending on their goals, schedule, and how their body feels. Some come in after workouts, some use recovery on rest days, and others make it part of their regular wellness routine. Our team can help you find a rhythm that works for you.

Why get a membership instead of single sessions?

Single sessions are a great way to get started, but membership is designed to help you stay consistent. The more regularly you use recovery, the easier it is to build it into your routine and experience the ongoing benefits of sauna, cold plunge, red light, infrared, and Normatec.

When is the best time to use recovery?

Recovery can fit into your routine in different ways. Some members come in after workouts, some use it on rest days, and others stop in when they need to reset, relax, or feel better. The best time is the time you can stay consistent with.

Safety & Comfort

Is the cold plunge safe for beginners?

Cold plunge can be beginner-friendly when you start slowly and listen to your body. You do not need to stay in for a long time to get started. Many first-time guests begin with a short plunge, focus on calm breathing, and build gradually over time.

Who should avoid sauna or cold plunge?

Sauna and cold plunge are not the right fit for everyone. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, blood pressure concerns, circulation issues, are sensitive to heat or cold, or have any medical concerns, please check with your healthcare provider before using sauna or cold plunge. Always listen to your body and stop if you feel lightheaded, uncomfortable, or unwell.

What should I wear?

Please wear appropriate attire for the modalities you plan to use. Swimwear or non-cotton plunge attire is required for the cold plunge. Comfortable athletic clothing works well for red light, infrared, and Normatec. Clothing should be clean, appropriate for a shared wellness space, and safe for the equipment.

Do I need to shower?

Yes. Please shower before every cold plunge and before your first sauna session. This helps keep the space clean, comfortable, and respectful for everyone using the recovery area.

Can I use the sauna and cold plunge in the same session?

Yes. Many members use sauna and cold plunge together as contrast therapy. If you are new, start slowly, listen to your body, and give yourself time between heat and cold. A Guided Contrast Session is the best way to learn the basics and feel confident with your first sauna and cold plunge experience.
